Our hair. What is it about our hair? It’s supposed to be our “crowning glory”, but for many of us, it’s just an unmanageable, unpredictable, time consuming accessory. Yes, there are women with perfect hair–they are the lucky ones. Long or short, their hair always works. I don’t know their secret, but I think it may be good genes, or a good stylist.
For the rest of us, it’s mostly a source of frustration. The last rainy day, all of us at the store were bemoaning our crummy hair. What is it? One lady said “It’s about control”—and you know, she was right!! We don’t have control over much, but you think at least we could manage our hair! We want it to do what we want it to do! When it does-we are jubilant and beautiful—but a bad hair day is death. Period. Our entire demeanor shrivels, we are sure everyone is feeling sorry for us….poor dear. Bad hair.
Ever notice how hard it is to find someone who is consistent when she does your hair? The new color is brilliant the first time, but two visits later, not so much. The last two haircuts I had (pre Franco), were so awful, it took me months to recover…or you find an artist, and she leaves. I end up not going to anyone and making do myself, because I need to trust the person who is in control of my hair. So, in reality, this is all about trust and giving up control. WOW!!! This is a weighty revelation.
It’s not easy to maintain control over anything today, and to control your hair, you have to give up control to someone else…this is giving me anxiety. My recurring bad dream is that someone cuts my hair so short that I look like a baby bird—really! Are we our hair? I don’t think so, but it’s just that it’s out there—for all to see, all the time.
It’s really tricky to be a woman, but I wouldn’t want to be anything else. You all make me smile! Brenda
