The difference between consignment and thrift shopping.
The Closet Exchange stores have been voted the best consignment stores in the region! Our shoppers tell us we are the best they have ever seen! We are consignment–not thrift.
Thrift stores take everything and screen very little. This is evidenced by the damaged merchandise, the age of the merchandise, and maybe even the smell. The stuff you find in thrift stores is donated to the store and they generally accept anything that isn’t obviously damaged.
In consignment, people bring merchandise for us to sell for them. We review everything–more than once. We do not take dirty clothes, damaged clothes, or outdated clothes. We are looking for as close to perfect as possible. Everything is clean, current and authentic.
The fun part of consignment is that you have one of everything– and everything was chosen by someone who thought it was special. Our shoppers find wonderful bargains and amazing fashions, and the women who owned them make money to upgrade their wardrobe. It’s a win-win!! Whether you are a consignor or a shopper, it’s really in your best interest to be both! You can’t lose!
Denim Jackets–Buffalo, Dolce and Gabbana, Earl
Diane von Furstenberg, Gap, True Religion, and Levi’s. Denim jackets have been around forever and for good reason–they always look good and they go with everything! Try one over a little dress, casual or dressy–it’s good to mix things up. They come like blazers, boyfriend jackets ( little longer and oversized), cropped, very fitted and tailored, or classic and a little worn. All are interesting for changing an outfit. Try one with shorts or capris– over a tunic and jeans–or over a maxi dress! Think of it as a versatile accessory–and it’s ageless! You can pull this off if you’re 20, 40 or 60! Honest. We want you to always be current–but with style!
Take care. Borrow your sweetie’s jacket-roll the sleeves and go! Brenda and Maggie
Citizens of Humanity, Seven, Paige Premium, J Brand
Jeans, jeans, jeans–so many brands! It seems there is a new jean every week–hard to keep up. There is no one specific style these days. That’s great–it means you can wear what flatters your shape the most–and what works with your life style! Gap and Levi’s both make a wide assortment of styles at a reasonable price. Not Your Daughter’s Jeans (NYDJ) have a higher rise which is nice for keeping your edges tucked in a bit, and a good amount of spandex. They smooth you out! Genetic’s skinny jeans aren’t as skinny as tights, so it’s a more flattering look. J Brand makes many great styles–all good, and Paige Premium has wonderful fabric!
If you’re curvy–Levi’s Curve ID collection is made for you. Try the Bold and Supreme cut. Also, a newer brand called Rue de Jeans, has an elastic insert in the waist band–no more muffin top!
The Wall Street Journal just ran an article on the actual cost of manufacturing jeans–it was an eye opener! It seem that the average cost to make a pair of high end jeans is $56.00. It wholesales to the retail store for about 150.00(!) and sells to the consumer at about $310.00!!! Do you still want to pay full price?
Our jeans start at about $20.00 and go to about $52.00—and we carry every label! Consigned jeans are a great buy and they’re already broken in! You can be best dressed for less!
Take care. Enjoy the day! Brenda and Maggie

Eileen Fisher and Chico’s!
These are two brands that have consistently been popular sellers in out stores. Both have a forgiving sizing method, which is so refreshing these days! Other manufacturers are cutting everything smaller in order to stretch their dollars–and as result, we are all feeling the pinch-literally. Both Chico’s and Eileen Fisher carry all sizes from 0 to plus–and styles that flatter us in both cut and fabric. Both carry a wonderful assortment of separates that mix with everything else we have in our closets. Many of their pieces are timeless–nice to have something that you can love for more than one season!
Our Designer and Boutique store at 906 Great Plain Ave. always has two racks of Eileen Fisher separates in every size! Our Best of the Mall store at 925 Great Plain Ave. always has two racks of Chico’s separates! If you’ve never tried these brands, we really urge you to give them a chance. They are well made, flattering and current–and buying them from the Closet Exchange guarantees you the best price you can find. Great clothes and great value!
You can be best dressed for less-let us show you how!

Dress like you mean it.
Dress like you mean it. Plan your outfits. Don’t wait until 8:30 in the morning to figure out what you’re going to wear. This creates way too much stress. When you get home at night- while you still have your face on- pick out tomorrow’s clothes. Check for any problems like missing buttons, torn hems, and wrinkles. Sometimes, the outfit requires rethinking or maybe it’s a do-over. It happens.
If an outfit works, you feel great. If it’s a mistake, your whole day starts wrong and your self-esteem plummets. Your confidence disappears. Be kind to yourself and take the time to plan for the next day. It really makes a difference. Believe me, I know.
If you need a little help or just the perfect piece to finish an outfit, come and see us. We get it!
Take care. Be gentle. Brenda and Maggie
Lacoste, Lilly, Burberry, Ella Moss, Vince–

Whether you’re going to the beach or to work–we have the pieces you need to keep your wardrobe fun and current, at prices that don’t spoil the fun of shopping!
The retail stores are all flipping over to fall clothes–seems silly when the temperature is in the 90′s! We carry summer when it’s summer–when we all need it! Our fashions are all current and in perfect condition, not old sale merchandise or dregs. To be perfectly honest–our stuff is fabulous!
This is a different kind of consignment-not just a few new pieces a day, but HUNDREDS!! Did I mention that we have lots of designer sunglasses–Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Kors, and more–!
As we keep saying–why pay full price? Always 60% to 80% off the retail price–and there are always markdowns in all our stores . Why wait for a sale? You can be best dressed for less. Come and see us.
Take care. Put your toes in the sand–Brenda and Maggie

We price the hundred dollar shoes between $20 and $50 to start. Then there are markdowns. You can buy three or four pairs of shoes with us for the price of one at retail. How great is that?
